Charlie did try to cash in, he did write a tell all book. He also made a
video. The difference is Charlie didn't slag on Elvis, he wrote a positive
book, and his video was positive. A tell all doesn't have to rag someone.
Charlie told his story as he saw it, to me that's a tell all. He told what
he felt was the story as he saw it and wanted us to see it. I like his
video, and he has lots of very high quality bootleg video footage, and some
good stories.

Let me say it before Palmer gets online - "What's new, Charlie died on stage
every night, so this is his final day on stage" or something similar.

Charlie was alright....I just wish I could have turned his mic down a

Nah, he'd be a little more clever than that.

Perhaps Richard would ask how much of a discount you get if there's two
foot of empty space in the coffin.

Or maybe he'd ask how many styrofoam peanuts it takes to keep Charlie
from sliding back and forth during the final ride home.

Those aren't my thoughts on this issue, I'm just trying to ask myself,
"What would Richard do?"...

May Charlie's cup runneth over. And may it be cool to the touch, and be
light...and have wings upon it. For if it be heavy and boileth over, and
have horns upon it....it shall be in the land of fire and brimstone.

He didn't die on stage every night, because he didn't do anything. You
have to be upfront and in the spotlight before you can die up there.

This was a guy who ruined every song he harmonised on, had the most
sycophantic laugh in the whole of showbusiness (he made Paul Shaffer
look subdued), wrote a book full of untruths that helped perpetuate
several of the biggest myths about Elvis, and who almost nobody has
had a good word to say about since I've been here.

But lets all celebrate his life now he's dead, shall we?

I was going to be the bigger man, and just keep quiet, but seeing as I
was asked - let the games commence.

Just reading through an I didn't realise how clever some of you are on
reading Richard's mind is it possible you can do that with every one
here? Because at the moment mine is saying " show a little respect if
not for Charlie Hodge then at least his family". they've lost some one
whom the they dearly love so at least try to be a little respectful if
thats at all possible?

My condolences to Charlie's family at this time and I hope they have
nice friends to offer them help an support in their hour of need,

I hope they don't. I hope they have better things to do than go on the
Internet and read Elvis groups, so soon after he died.

You mean the "Elvis and Charlie, rocking like back in the good old
days" scenario? I have a problem with that one.

For the purposes of this discussion, I'll pretend that there is a
heaven. So up until a few days ago, Elvis was happily jamming along
with his Supergroup - Hendrix on guitar, Entwistle on bass, Bonham on
drums, and Carl Wilson and Buddy Holly on rhythm guitars and backing
vocals.

Suddenly, he hears a voice in the distance -

"Hey, E'vis. ELLLVISSS!....I wheeel be hooome agaaaaain...HA HA
HAAAAA!"

At this point we're supposed to believe that Elvis' face lights up and
he says to his new buddies

"Hey it's Charlie! Charlie! Mah boy, mah boy...finally, the last piece
of the jigsaw falls into place."

as opposed to what I think would really happen, which is that he'd
whisper

"OK guys...if we're real quiet, he might leave".

Okay, I'll bite....

I would've said Ed McMahon instead of Paul Shaffer, but I see your point.

And yes, I've pointed out some of the ludicrous statements that Hodge made
in his book. I still stand by them as being ludicrous. But that doesn't
really mean that the entire book sucked. There were some funny and touching
stories in there that I'm more than sure really happened.

And I wouldn't call referring to his death as something sad or touching a
'celebration' of his life either. Though I guess it remains to be seen if
now the home he lived in will become open for the public. Though, I'm
betting Nay on that one.

Personally, Richard, I don't see why you're considered the most cynical one
here anyway. I happen to think that Broadway Chris, Devildog and myself are
contenders for that position. You've merely been here longer.

And as for Charlie being so much like Ed McMahon and Shaffer, at least Elvis
was a black belt in karate and less likely to be the kind of guy you'd wanna
piss off, which is more than I can say for Letterman and Carson when it
comes to toughness.

Okay, your serve....

I had to pick one post to reply to, and it was yours. I'm not saying
that every accusation I leveled was embodied by what you wrote. But
we've had somebody setting up a Charlie Hodge group, and we've had
somebody else recounting his enjoyment of the Charlie Hodge show at
Pigeon Forge, (and if there was a reason why somebody would go
straight to hell, then aiding and abetting an Elvis impersonator after
you've worked with the real thing has to be high on the list), and
it's only day one.

If he hadn't died, and yesterday somebody had asked the question "what
do you think of Charlie Hodge?", the same people who are today talking
about a sad loss to the world, would have been saying they hated his
annoying laugh, his terrible vocals on stage, the trite little book he
wrote, and the fact that he put out the "Elvis had cancer" story.

Now that he's dead I'm not suggesting those people should come here
and say they're glad he's dead - and I'm not glad he's dead - I'm
saying they should keep quiet, that's all.

But I think it's pretty traditional to say at least something when somebody

It was several in the early part of the show when they had Charlie's mic up

It's a record that (a) was held back for years before it finally saw
the light of day, and (b) is good in spite of the backing vocals
rather than because of them.

If he'd been that fantastic a vocalist, he'd have been pushed up front
on stage, and he'd have been assigned more backing duties in the
studio.

Just because he's dead, does that mean history has to be re-written
and that suddenly Charlie Hodge was second only to Elvis in the vocal
stakes?

Oh hang on, I was forgetting about Sherrill Neilsen.

Actually I reckon Charlie was OK singing wise. Don't know what he was like

Anyway, RIP Charlie.

I think the reason we love Elvis so much, is because, we see a part of
his personality in our own persona. And we all have a, "Charlie Hodge"
in our life.

It's always hard to lose an old friend we never met.

I think the reason Charlie's faults are brought to light, is the fact
that we see the same faults in ourselves, and want someone to say that
it's cool to have them.

I would've wrote a book about Elvis, had I lived at Graceland 17 years.

I probably would've been labled a, "kiss-ass", and my only defence,
would be the facination of living in Elvis' world.

I have a friend who's laugh is annoying to many, (he sounds like the
"Cowardly Lion").
I just smile when I hear it, knowing the alternative is unattractive
and sad.

We'll see you up there Charlie,

Everybody gets it in the end, H. It's the one thing that makes us all equal.
That was the whole point Martin Luther King Jr was trying to make. Life is
merely a ride, enjoy it. And if you wanna smoke in the privacy of your own
home I say go for it. I've met some people who are so wired they'd probaby
wind up inside a McDonalds with an Uzi if they couldn't smoke. This whole
anti-smoking campaign is gonna backfire on us in the long run. Did you know
that 93 percent of all mental patients smoke? There's an interesting group
to deny an addiction to, huh? In the next ten years it'll be illegal to
smoke in America probably, but you'll still be able to buy guns. Some guy
will leave a hospital's mental ward and kill 27 people for no reason just
because he had to go more than a week without a cigarette. Get drunk and run
people down with a car and nobody says stop making alcohol. Why? Because
everybody enjoys drinking. But light up a cigarette in an outdoor stadium
and you can bet that some whiney maggot Rob Reiner wannabe faggot is gonna
complain about it. Don't smoke. Don't smoke. What's that? Bill Goodman's gun
and knife show is coming back to town? YEEEEHAWWW!!!! Get the kids and pack
up the camper. This will be almost as exciting as Colonel Parker's gambling
addiction. And what about all the violence that takes place after big
sporting events. YEEEHAAAWWW! Sports is awesome! It's not an addiction. Just
because half the men in America can't go a single day without watching the
scores and getting all the magazines on the shelves don't mean nothing. PUT
THAT CIGARETTE OUT!!!!

Yea, right. I know a guy who doesn't smoke. Never did and today he's 397
years old. He'll live forever. And if you believe that I got a broken watch
I'd like to sell you. A casio. Real nice. I paid 99 cents for it at a store
called Buttf**kers. I'll let it go for $300.00, but only because I like you.

I agree about the hypocrisy. But I agree with the smoking bans. Second
hand smoke kills as well. You don't have to smoke to get lung cancer.
Just be around someone that does. I know we all get it in the end. But
smokers get it in some of the worst ways. I would not wish Lung Cancer
or throat cancer on my worst enemy. Did you hear about the actor Jack
Wild who also recently died? He had to have his voice box removed
because of long term smoking.

Don't smoke.

Yea it is a nasty habit, that's for sure. So is the smoking bans going on in
Canada as well? I thought it was only America. By the way, I've been meaning
to ask you, how do you and your friends feel about Canada becoming more
conservative in the latest election?

I agree about the hypocrisy. But I agree with the smoking bans. Second
hand smoke kills as well. You don't have to smoke to get lung cancer.

As far as I know California, and Ireland, and Norway has the most stringent
demands towards smoking. But as I see it is more convenient to stand outside
a restaurant/pub in sunny California to inhale the poison than it is in
rainy/snowy Ireland and Norway. If your a social person that goes out from
time to time, in California you'll probably only get a tan if you're a
smoker, while in Norway you'll freeze to death long before you get cancer.
It's a nasty habit all-right, but I hate this superior guardian thing.

BTW, Scott, I noticed you pointed out America in your post. I just have to
ask, what is IYO 'America'? Are you meaning Brazil, and Argentina, and
Chile, and etc. as well as the US? I don't mean to be a 'smart-ass', but
I've always wondered about this America/US thing. As I see it, the US is
only a small part of America.

Everyone who is still smoking, please stop.
This bullshit habit has caused so much misery and death over the years,
I'm so surprised it's still legal.
I'm battling my girlfriend to get her to stop but I'm losing.
Has everyone noticed that there are so many people smoking on the
streets these days that our air smells like poison?
Blair
so true..I just lost my sis in law last month and she was only 46 due
to it, and my father's xray just came back bad and he has to have a ct
scan tomorrow to see if its a mass....

I'm very sad to hear Charlie passed away. My friend, who is a record
producer, just emailed me and I came here to see if it was
true........I had no idea he was this sick.

I'm so sorry to hear this.
I thought he was hospitalized
briefly and was ok and went home.
Adios and God Bless Charlie
He was, and took a turn for the worse. You never can tell. So good that he
had Jennifer!

Adios and God Bless, indeed.

Sorry to hear about Charlie.

I saw him in January 2004 at Memories Theater in Pigeon Forge, TN. He
told a story about how sometimes Elvis would catch him off-guard
onstage by throwing water on him. But Elvis would throw the water
toward the crotch area, to make it look like Charlie pissed his pants.
I remember thinking, "that's mean, but funny." Good ol' Elvis.

RIP CH.

Thank you everyone for your kind words about my husband. For those who posted hateful messages, you didn't know Charlie. He was a sweet man. No reason to hate him. And he ALWAYS had Elvis in his best interest. They were brothers. Rest in peace Charlie. We all love you.
