I always felt that "Hurt" was for how he felt with 'Cillia..but I
suppose it's up for opinion only. Only he knows.

Red West wrote Seperate Ways. My bet is it was with Elvis and
Priscilla in mind.
There has been a lot of discussion on the subject of Elvis songs and if
they were sung with his relationship with her in mind. I've always
felt that his songs changed shortly before, during and after the
divorce that says they were. Mr. Lacker has taken a position opposite
mine on the subject. But according to Red there were only 2 women that
Elvis truely loved. His mother and Priscilla. I'll go with Red on
that one.

It's my understanding that Red wrote Separate Ways at Elvis' requested and that Elvis helped (perhaps with lyrics?). No one will ever be able to convince me that "Always on My Mind" and "Hurt" were not sung TO her.

I don't think that Red specifically wrote "Separate Ways" with Elvis
and Priscilla in mind even though the song's lyrics mirrored their
lives. The song was copyrighted in 1970, two years before Elvis and
Priscilla filed for divorce. The song wasn't published by either of
Elvis's publishing companies and I've never heard of Elvis helping out
with the lyrics or the music. If he had something to do with the
writing of the song, I couldn't imagine greedy Parker allowing the tune
to be published by an outside music publisher (which was Press Music)
rather than one of Elvis's publishing companies having the copyright.
While it's possible that "Separate Way" and "Always On My Mind" may
have been influenced by his break-up with Priscilla, I don't think
there's any way he was singing the song "Hurt" to Priscilla. She was
four years gone from his life by that point. When he recorded "Hurt,"
I believe he had only recently broken up with Linda Thompson, who was
one of the two best women he ever had in his life that he should've
married. (Ann Margaret was the other.) If the songs reflected what he
felt, then I think "Hurt" may have been about his failed relationship
with Linda and certainly not Priscilla.

I can't see how a song written in 1970 could really have been based on
Elvis separation...maybe the songwriter is just saying that to make it
seem more personal? I think Elvis just saw it as a good song, and
since Red was involved with it, a way to help out his good friend, who
would recieve royalties from it. Granted, Elvis may have thought about
the parallels the song had with his personal situation, but as a
statement about his heartbreak and distress over his breakup I just
don't buy.

I also wonder how much his divorce really bothered him, and for what
reasons. How promiscuous was he during his years with Priscilla? It
seems like his marriage only slowed his womanizing down briefly, and he
was travelling so much he probably saw Lisa Marie almost as much as he
did when they were together. It wasn't like they often went on the
road with him when he was touring, and I may be wrong, but I don't
really think that the whole family stayed with him in Vegas for the
entire length of his engagements there.

The idea of Lisa being wrenched from his arms is a bit overdramatic I
think. Surley he wasn't so dumb as to think Priscilla leaving wasn't a
possiblity or even likely. I'm certainly no Priscilla fan, but if he
hadn't been Elvis, I doubt she would have stayed as long as she did. I
think because he was so used to getting his way Priscilla leaving was a
terrible blow to his ego, and maybe even more because the guy she was
having an affair with was one of his karate acquaintances, but I don't
think it threw him into a deep depression from which he never
recovered. If indeed he was in such a state, I think it had more to do
with his career and his drug use.

But what do I know?

About the seperation Garry or the wanting of a seperation?
"I see a change has come into our lives, it's not the same as it used
to be. And it's not to late to realize our mistake, we're just not
right for each other. Now there's nothing left to do but go our
seperate ways."

The song is not about their seperation. Noone knows what Elvis was
thinking when he sang it but these thought certainly had come to mind
over the years.

You've never read "Elvis What Happened"?
Apparently quite promiscuous.

His controlling nature caused a lot of heartbreak in his life but that
doesn't change feelings people have during this type of thing.
Regarless of who was at fault and things you may have said or thought
you had believed.

Women stay with spousal abusers for a lot worse than Elvis ever did and
they certainly are not Elvis Presley. I believe she stayed because
she loved him.

The drug abuse only served to escalate the blow to his ego. Are you
saying wanting to have someone killed isn't a deep depression? Never

Another couple of songs I thought he might have had his relationship

post or pre divorce songs?

As far as the women Elvis really loved in his life, I guess that
depends on who you talk to.
There's no doubt in my mind that Elvis loved Cilla at one time, but if
you talk to someone else who knew Elvis, they would say Ann Margaret
was the love of Elvis's life.

Not to take anything away from Ann, but Love or Lust Scottie?....
How much time did Elvis share with Ann Margaret? Did they share a home
together? A child?
Did Elvis get to shape her and mold her into what he wanted her to be?
Just the two careers clashing would have spelt failure from the git go.
And the independent nature of Ann Margaret would not set well with him
in the long run... Sure we all know she is a wonderful soul willing to
give up her career for her husband and take care of him. But what
about Elvis really? Would he have given up his ego for her? Nice
fairy tale but I don't think so.
Elvis wanted his cake and wanted to eat it too. But even within his
complicated world we would all deep inside think we know what we love
and don't. Red West was there during this period and his words are
that there were only 2 women that he Truely loved. Has Red changed his
opinon over the years? Red is the only one there from the very

A long term relationship with Ann would not have worked because she was
also a celebrity and had a career of her own. What if her career had
become more successful than Elvis's? Can't see Elvis jumping for joy
about that. Unless she gave that up i don't see it working out. More
than one person who knew him said he wanted the woman waiting at home
for him.He had an old fashioned view of women.

I think Marty or someone said that Red got that song to Elvis because
he thought Elvis would be able to relate to it they had just split. And
Elvis recorded Seperate Ways and Always On My Mind about a month or 2
after Priscilla left.

I read that one of the reasons the people at that recording session
wanted Elvis to sing "Burning Love" is because they wanted an upbeat
song because all elvis was wanting to sing was the depressing
seperation songs like those.

Love or Lust....you make a good point Eddie. Sure it would have been a
big mistake if Elvis had taken Ann as his wife. It would never have

Yes, Midnight is another one. I think at one point in most of our
lives, he have had to travel down the bleak road of separation or
Divorce. Most of the time, love has nothing to do with the decision to
stay or go, sometimes you get use to somebody, or you stay because of
kids, or you just don't know what the hell else to do. "Whats love got

Some of the songs I relate a lot to, probably had nothing to do with
Elvis and 'Cilla... then again I wonder if when he sang "Hurt" live
concert, near the end, maybe he was talking to those who wrote the
book? Not a woman at all?
I also would love to know his thoughts when he sang: "They remind me
too much of you"
and "I was the one"
As for non Elvis songs, I can see my entire life in the song... "If you
could read my mind love.."

Genie, Do you mean the song sung by Gordon Lightfoot? Boy, does that
bring back memories! lol. Ok not about Elvis really, well ok maybe.
Anyway, there was this guy in my home town, that looked sooo much like
Elvis, build, facial features, could sing, you name it, Well anyway he
was too old for us girls at the time, I was around 15 or 16, and he was
probably in his early twenties. He would bring his Guitar over to my
friends house and play and sing, and women would come from miles
around, no lie!! So one day he showed up at my friends house, and there
was no way we could force ourselves to leave, so my freind told her Dad
she didn't feel good, and stayed home from school, and I skipped it all
together, ( I got caught too, but it was worth it) well he sang songs
all day long to us, and one of them was "If You Could Read My Mind"
Every time I hear that song, I think of that day, and when I see
Elvis's 68 come back special I think of him, because he would just sit
and play his Guitar, and his personality was so much like Elvis's that
they could have been twins,. By the way,I never once heard him mention
Elvis's name. I don't even know if he was an Elvis fan. Like Elvis,
what he had was a God given talent. ( Ok Ladies yes I did sneak a
little kiss, who could resist?)

That was related to Elvis, in many ways. And a wonderful story.
Yes, I liked Gordon Lightfoots song so much, I related to the words in
more ways than one.
I also (how odd) knew a youngman who briefly came into the clinic in
Seattle, who could have passed for Elvis at about 18.
Everyone's jaw dropped (at least in my age bracket) and other's looked
on because he was such a doll. I doubt it was plastic surgery, he
claimed no talent at all... in fact he was interested in being a Doctor
not a singer.
That year it was a Vet Clinic, so as not to confuse anyone that he was
standing in a Plastic surgeons office...lol
He enjoyed being told how much like Elvis Presley he looked, but said
that his Mother wished he looked more plain so people wouldn't stare.
They stare if you're ugly, and they stare if you're gorgeous- I guess?
The worry is, I get that all the time. So people stare when you appear
crazy also. I even look all the way around me, and God only knows
which it might be, maybe all of the above in one way or another?
Especially as tired as I feel before Christmas strikes midnight.....
carts full of cat food, dog food, bird food, Hamster food, and toys,
toys and more stuff'n'things. Doesn't the smallest living creature
truly deserve a Merry Christmas?
God bless us all, and pray for peace and strength within.

I just wanted to share this with you. I feel as though it was one of
those special things that happens to you in life, that always stays in
your heart.

Since Gordon Lightfoot has come up, I'll go ahead and post this.

Tonight I went to dinner with friends and had a couple martinis and a
glass of wine...my doctor said I could have up to three drinks on any
one occasion a couple times a week and I rarely do, but hell, it's
Christmas, so fuck it...but I was kind of bored when I got home, so I
decided to organize some cds I had just kinda stacked around and I came
across one that I hadn't listened to in some time but I find pretty
amazing.

I don't know if anybody here listens to this singer, her name is Eva
Cassidy, and I'm not sober enough to remember her life story at this
point, but I just have to say that I don't think I have ever heard a
more beautiful voice in my life. I have several of her discs, each one
loaded with beautiful covers of standards and familiar tracks, but
unfortunately not heard by many. This one is called "Imagine" and
includes her cover of that John Lennon song, as well as Lightfoot's
"Early Morning Rain," "Tennessee Waltz," "Danny Boy," "Fever," the
stunning Sandy Denny song " Who Knows Where The Time Goes," and a few
others, all beautiful, heartbreaking, tear jerking, whatever.... On
other discs she's done great versions of Sting's "Fields Of Gold" and
probably the best "Over The Rainbow" ever.

Anyway, she died young, at 33, a real shame, a great loss, another
incredible talent gone too soon, but what can you do? Listen to her
sing, you won't be disappointed.

Dear Garry,

First off, it sounded like you had a wonderful night! :-)

Thanks for sharing re Eva Cassidy, I will search her out. She sings
some favourite songs of mine, so I'm sure I'll enjoy listening to her,
thoroughly.

Merry Christmas. Please take care of yourself. Wishing you health and
happiness.

Kind wishes,
Jess
