A pack a day???
In the UK that would be 20+ (Our cigs are sold in tens & twenties, but a
'pack' usually means twenty). That's a lot of cigarettes for someone that is
rarely pictured with one, (I can think of only one picture, a fan shot from
around '65,
I'm an ex-smoker myself, and I'm VERY surprised to hear Elvis had a twenty a
day habit.
I remembered this was discussed here a few times before and I found Marty's
message to be sure I was answering exactly what he said.
Who said Elvis was anti-smoking? He smoked cigarettes during the 50's and
60's.
He also smoked cigars during the 60's and 70's.
Most of us around him smoked also with no objection from him, although some
of us quit in 1969.
He just didn't like any girl he was with to smoke.
What he didn't like others to do had nothing to do what he did. "Do as I
say, not as I do!"

He smoked a little over a pack a day.
Lamar, Joe and I quit during the Memphis sessions at American on a spur of
the moment whim. Lamar and I have never smoked again, I don't think Joe has
but I'm not sure if he did after Elvis died.
